Whospunit Slot Review

I love Agatha Christie novels. Admittedly I'm more of a Hercule Poirot fan than a Miss Marple one, but her ingenious mysteries have kept me captivated for decades. (I'm a slow reader and she wrote a lot of books – gimme a break!) Her novels were a clear inspiration for various board games and murder mystery themed parties worldwide.
I was once invited to a murder mystery party and cast as the elderly alcoholic cook named Mrs. Marsden (In case you're wondering how I ended up with the short straw, a somewhat vengeful ex-girlfriend organized the evening). As the night wore on it became painfully evident that the script was written with one purpose - maximum embarrassment to me.

The problem is if you bail on a party like this you come across as an absolute douchebag! So, I went along with her ploy. The drunk strip-dance I had to perform wasn't the end of the world but having to make a pass at the reverend character was a little more humiliating.

Anyway, I'm scarred for life as these memories came flooding back when I saw that I had to review “Whospunit?” by Betsoft Gaming. It's a video slot which taps into the popularity of murder mysteries and can take you on a sleuthing expedition via P.C, mobile device or tablet.

Right from the start it's clear that this is no ordinary offering. A game tip flashes up:
”The clock will begin as soon as you hit spin. This timer counts down the seconds until Detective Mode begins. Collect Clue coins to earn spins on the Detective mode reels through standard game play”.
What the heck? The stage was set, both intriguing and perplexing me – that's a good sign for a mystery, isn't it? Anyway – enough with this introduction – THE GAME IS AFOOT WATSON!

Gameplay

“Whospunit?” has 5 reels and 30 paylines, making it an offering of medium volatility. The primary symbols are the array of characters and the victim (shown hilariously as a pair of feet sticking out). They are joined by a hidden safe, wall of clues and magnifying glass.

Furthermore, each level has unique symbols:

  • Level 1: Gazebo, Dining Room, Study, Kitchen, Bathroom.

  • Level 2: Poison, Knife, Noose, Gun, Wrench.

  • Level 3: Cigarette, Duster, Stethoscope, Watch, Spilt Tea.

There's also an evidence folder (hmm..interesting) and a wild icon etched in gold. The controls are a visual treat with up top: Options, Achievements (I'll explain later), Time Display, Level nr. and View Pays.
Down below are Clue Spins (gathered after each turn), Choose Coin, Paylines, Bet Per Line, Total Bet, Spin, Max Bet, Spin, Autoplay and Double Up.

Features

The main part of the game functions much like many slots – after each winning spin, a chance to double up your profits is given. Here you get a simple 2X bet on a coin toss.

When all 5 characters appear on different reels in regular play, Free Spins are awarded with the following choices:

  • Ellie Maid: 20 Free Spins with 3X multiplier.

  • Dr. Van Austren: 10 Free Spins with Random wilds (1-5).

  • Mr. Wellington: 10 Free Spins and he goes both ways…I mean he pays both ways (although he former may be true also).

  • Miss Chatham: 10 Free Spins with 6X multipliers-.

  • Butler Covington: 10 Free Spins and he becomes a wild.

Unique Features

The trickier part of the game is its automatic Detective Mode, which is initiated every 5 minutes. You need to collect clue coins which each give you 1 Free Spin. In each Free Spin, you get clues every time you win. Collect the clues, and you might be able to solve the entire mystery for a big prize!

The investigation is launched on one of the 3 levels of the mansion. Moving through each level, revealing clues, players eventually identify the killer. The symbols are different in this part of the game and each winning combination of 3 or more symbols will earn both a credit win and points towards identifying aspects of the crime. Collect 5 clue points and the level is solved.

Each time a murderer, murder weapon or location is revealed its displayed in your achievements, together with an increased detection status badge.
Once you've solved all 3 levels, you get a chance to earn the Second Screen Bonus Round. To trigger this, you need to get an evidence symbol in the middle of the center reel (Its outlined in gold – you can't miss it). The best part is that all the spins after you finish round 3 until this bonus is triggered are free! Once the bonus is activated, you select the accused murderer and interrogate them "law and order style” for bonus credits.
(If you happen to get 2 or more evidence symbols anywhere on the reels a cash prize is also awarded!)

Performance

Despite the complexity of graphics and animations, “Whospunit?” never skipped a beat performance wise. And when I say that the graphics and animation are intricate – I truly mean it: BetSoft outdid themselves with this game. The sound effects and music add both to the aura of mystery and tinge of humor.

Conclusion

Put down the copy of “Murder on the Nile” and get ready for a riveting interactive experience with fantastic winning potential! Am I speaking in hyperboles? Well, there's a good reason for that – because “Whospunit?” is worth the highest praise – it's inventive, funny, engaging and innovative.
